The choice to go on your first backpack hunt is one that starts with excitement, but is oftentimes followed up with being overwhelmed. There are a lot of moving pieces and if you don’t take the time to line those up, you will either end up not going at all, or will have a less than desirable experience out there.
Sitting here at the beginning of 2025, I have been backpack hunting now for about a decade, and I’ve done it all over the western United States. Man, it’s been such a rewarding experience and I’ve been lucky enough to share it with a wide range of people. Some are still avid backpack hunters and others don’t ever want to do it again. You either love it or hate it.
After getting to take quite a few folks on their first backpack hunts, I have narrowed down a few key topics on how to do such things. I remember when I was first starting and I had a whole lot of questions with not a lot of answers. Down below is a video that I hope will clear some of those up for you. With any luck, you’ll have a much better idea of how to pull off your own first backpack hunt. From the planning phase to actually doing the damn thing.
