Josh Kirchner holding his bow on a coues deer hunt in Arizona

Now, I know it may sound cheesy, but when a new year starts, it feels like my mind gets a reset. Things seem more attainable and motivation is high for what’s to come. This is how I feel walking into the coues mountains every January. And every January my fingers are crossed that the year will start off with a bang, or I should say an archery coues deer.

This year was a little different compared to past years chasing these little deer. Normally, I’m accompanied by at least one person. Whether that’s a hunting partner or a camera guy. With schedules just not lining up, it left me walking solo into coues camp. Instead of being bummed, I decided I was going to try and make the best of it. My camera would be my hunting partner. My “Wilson” if you would.

I absolutely love to film my hunts and tell a story through film. Doing it solo though is another beast entirely. With that said, I decided that I wanted to make a film completely dedicated to solo hunting. This is something I’ve done quite a bit of through the years. I get into how I started, the physical struggles, mental struggles, and then how much harder bowhunting is on your own. In the end, I really love to solo hunt, but it doesn’t come without a price and it’s something I had to get accustomed to.

So, this is not a story about my hunt. That will come with the film. It’s more of an update. I did indeed shoot a buck with my bow and I cannot wait to tell the story of the whole shindig. So, the year did start off great. With just me, my bow, a coues buck, and “Wilson.” Stay tuned.
