Method Archery is offering the next generation of hunting arrows. Built to your specs and delivered to your door.
In all honesty, I’m not a guy that shops around too much for hunting arrows. For one, when I find something I like and that works, I stick with it. There are way too many things to go wrong in bowhunting to leave even more chances to arrows that I am not well acquainted with. With that being said, I’m also a busy guy and always looking for ways to become more efficient. This is where Method Archery caught my attention.
Method Arrows(formerly Vector Arrows) is a small arrow company based out of Wisconsin run by a few guys that eat, sleep, and breathe bowhunting. It’s what they do and they saw a need in the arrow industry. That need was closing the gap on perfect arrow flight for the everyday Joe that doesn’t have time to tinker all day long.
From that, they created an algorithm. One that takes into account all of your personal specs(draw length, bow model, broadhead weight, etc.). At the end out pops a perfectly dynamic spined arrow for you and your setup. All of that with a few clicks on the computer and it’s delivered right to your door. Their tagline is “Built to Your Specs” and this is why.
They offer two different models of arrows. The HMR and the ZMR. The HMR is the heavier of the two, so the ZMR sounded right up my alley. I don’t prefer a really heavy arrow. It steepens the arch of the arrow in flight which means less forgiveness on yardage estimation. Even if you know the exact yardage, if your arm drops a pinch, you’re gonna miss a lot.
Getting arrows from Method Archery is extremely easy and pain-free. Click on Build Your Arrows and pick the arrow you want(HMR or ZMR). From there you’ll have the ability to choose the number of arrows you’d like(6, 12, or 18) and then you’ll enter all of your specs. Your bow brand, bow model, draw weight, draw length, broadhead weight, vane selection(4 configurations), if you’d like right or left helical, and then choose the vane color. After you fill all of that out, beneath you’ll see your total arrow weight and FOC percentage based on the information you put in. Click buy and that’s literally it.
Some of you are likely skeptical at this point. Rightfully so, as I was skeptical as well. This is why I had to test these out to see if their system held any weight.
Before this point, the arrow that I was shooting was in my quiver after sifting through 20+ different arrow profiles and a lot of time in the pro shop. Not ideal, but we landed on something that worked great, not to mention the friendly banter that always happens in these places. In other words, I was happy and not planning on switching arrows. So, my testing would be rather blunt and to the point. Do these work or not?
The first time I got a box of arrows from these guys I spun them and then took the field points off. Yup. I didn’t even bother shooting them with field points. I went and grabbed a fixed blade broadhead instead. Something sure to show if the arrow was built properly and magnify imperfections in arrow flight. After the first shot, I put my foot in my mouth.
Well, I should say after the second shot. I shot a broadhead and then a field point. That ended with a busted nock. No adjustments at all. This was straight out of the box. My bow was already tuned to my other arrow, but this was impressive. What took us hours took Method Archery minutes and a shipping label.
Time at the range and in the field would be the true teller in the actual performance of the ZMR arrows. This is no BS, but on the range, I experienced some of the best groups I’ve ever shot out to 100 yards. The arrows flew true and they were consistent.
I shot these arrows for a better part of a year before actually bringing them into the field. That’s how paranoid I am about this these days. We only get so many opportunities on archery hunts so I wanted to make sure I had ultimate confidence in them before hunting.
This past January I took them on a backcountry coues deer hunt. I’m happy to say that my backpack was a bit heavier walking back to the truck after 5 days of hunting. It came after a pretty lengthy shot on a buck. Coues deer are small animals so these shots have to be extremely precise and my arrow flew great.
As cool of a system as Method Archery has, it doesn’t come without some downsides. The first is, you don’t really get the ultimate choice in your arrow spine, length of the arrow, degree of helical vs. offset, etc. For folks that really pay attention to all of that stuff and are married to a certain setup, this might not be the route for you.
Not to forget, if you’re the one building your arrows, you won’t get a hand in that process either. This brings to light the fact that you are putting your ultimate trust in someone else building your arrows to your standards. That also might not sit well with some, and I get it.
When the clock strikes 12, I’m pretty stoked about these arrows and the company Method Archery as a whole. They are doing something that nobody else is doing. And it’s refreshing to see someone do something out of the norm and break the standards of what has always been the process of getting perfect arrow flight. With these, you will be able to achieve that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you won’t have to turn a wrench, but the point is, you can cross off the arrow as a variable in the equation. They’re gonna go where you want them to. And for me, that’s in my quiver.
