Unlike most kids that watched cartoons on Saturday mornings, mine were a little different. There was a TV involved, but instead of cartoons my Dad and I would watching hunting shows. Most of them revolved all around the whitetail deer. An animal I’ve wanted to hunt for quite some time. And now I’m going to get to do just that.
Come middle of November, so now, I’ll be sitting in a tree in the great state of Colorado. It’ll be my first time sitting in a treestand hunting whitetails. My buddy has access to some great country that he manages and offered to host me. Absolutely stoked about this and will keep you all updated on how things shake out. My tag is good for a buck or a doe and I’d be more than happy with either.
While preparing for this hunt, I realized I had better get some different clothing items. My western system, while great for my regular backcountry/spot and stalk hunting, just wasn’t going to cut it for the task at hand.
My friends at Black Ovis were nice enough to hook me up with a full whitetail system from Sitka. I’ll be doing a full write-up on this kit after the hunt over on the Black Ovis website. So far, though, all I can say is this stuff is super warm and super fluffy and quiet. I’m excited to put it to the test.
Aside from the clothing changes, I also picked up an insulated pair of boots. They are the Wild Rock Plus from Crispi. 800 grams of insulation for these long sits in a tree. Normally, I’d never buy insulated boots for what I do, but again, this hunt is different.
Everything else in my kit is the same. My backpack, bow set up, arrow set up, etc. I have recently switched to a hinge release, but that wasn’t exactly for the whitetail deer hunting. It’s just what has been feeling the best to me, so I went with it.
By the time you read this, I’ll be likely hiking through the snow and climbing into a tree. Colorado received a healthy snow storm right before my arrival. Lucky me, haha. Nonetheless, I’m super grateful to have a chance at taking one of these whitetails home with me. Whether it’s a buck or a doe, isn’t a huge concern. I just want to have safe travels, a good hunt, and learn. Talk to you all soon.
