I have officially started the Keto Diet and am officially one week into it! So far so good, but there has definitely been some challenges along the way. It is expected at this point. Whenever starting something new, there is an acclimation period that exists. This experience has been no exception to that.

Catch Up Before Keto Talk

Before I dive into how Keto has been going, I just wanted to play catch up a tad with you all. I never checked in to let you know how life was after I stopped clean eating! Man, it was good! The freedom to eat whatever the heck I wanted was a welcomed addition to everyday life. No restrictions, no nothing. If I wanted to face plant into a donut, it was happening! So, that was the good. Now, let’s chat about the bad. During the month of not eating clean, I experienced an increase in headaches and gas. Same as I would go through before eating clean. That was expected in my eyes and I was waiting for it to tell you the truth. Another thing that increased was muscle soreness after working out. My weight actually stayed the same. I think this is due to my wife and I keeping some of our habits from the clean eating, as well as maintaining a workout schedule. After doing this freebie month, there was a small part of me that was missing clean eating. Now, it was off to the Keto Diet though.

The Start of the Keto Diet

I have to give credit where credit is due. My wife was such a huge help when it came to doing research for this, as I was out in the field quite a bit. Right off the bat, buying all of this stuff to get started was fairly expensive to be honest. Our grocery bill actually tripled, which I wasn’t stoked on. Most of the higher priced items though were items that will essentially last me through the rest of the month though.

For the most part, Keto has been going good. My first day was insane! I have never had so much energy before! My brother was laughing as I bounced around at work. Felt super clear in the head and full of energy. This made me feel pretty awesome about what the next month would bring.

Keto is More Involved

This diet is definitely a bit more involved than eating clean was. On top of having to prepare pretty much all of my food, I’ve also gotta track it through an app on my phone. Hitting the right macros are essential for the Keto Diet. You want around 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs. Without tracking the food, I just really wouldn’t know where I was in that regard. That has also been something I’ve had to get used to. Measuring everything and then entering it all into my phone.

So Much Fat in Keto!

My first impressions of this diet are SO MUCH FAT! I can’t believe the amount of cheese and butter in these recipes! It’s enough to for me to say, “yeah, that’s too much.” However, this is life on the Keto Diet. Butter and MCT oil in coffee, everything cooked in butter, and a unhealthy looking amount of cheese on things. I had a friggin smoothie with a quarter cup of cream cheese in it! That is bonkers!

So Far So….

I have to admit, I have been getting sick of the amount of butter in things. After a week, I have stopped putting butter in my coffee and started just doing MCT, heavy cream, and almond milk. Way better as far as I’m concerned. Another thing I don’t dig too much about it thus far is that I really can’t be messing around with a whole lot of fruit. I LOVE FRUIT. A few berries here and there are fine, but apples and bananas(two of my favorite)are a no go. My favorite parts of the day so far are breakfast and dinner. Eggs, bacon, avocado, YUM! Dinner has looked something like a burger with 2 oz of colby jack cheese on top served with broccoli and butter. Fat bombs have grown on me as well, but only if there is monk fruit sweetener on them. Without it, I can barely stomach them because of how much butter and cream cheese there is.

3 Weeks to Go!

One week down and 3 to go! I am planning on doing the same thing for the Keto Diet that I did for clean eating and building a backcountry meal plan for it. I have already gotten into the field once with Keto and plan on more trips to get that dialed in more. Thanks for following along and if you have any Keto Diet tips for me, I’m all ears! Thankfully, I have not gotten the Keto Flu. Stoked on that!
