I was so fortunate to have, not one, but two high country archery mule deer tags this year. This is a hunt that I’ve dreamed about doing for years and finally pulled the trigger on. The first took place in Utah and the second was in Colorado. Both of these hunts were backpack style hunts and both of them tested my limits. We were packed into the Utah backcountry for 6 days and also 6 days in Colorado. My brother and I made some incredible memories on these adventure hunts and I cannot wait to do it again. There is just something about being above treeline and glassing up big high country mule deer.
In Utah, we saw over 50 different bucks, which blew our minds! As you’ll see in the film, I unfortunately missed 6 times on one buck! That was an absolute heart breaker. After returning home, apparently my bow got knocked around pretty good and there were multiple things out of place. That on top of nerves left me with one more arrow in my quiver and I just didn’t feel comfortable hunting with one arrow. This is why we headed home early from Utah.
The film is called “Perseverance” for obvious reasons. After missing all of those times in Utah, feeling helpless with my bow, and getting pounded by the backcountry, everything indeed came together in Colorado. Both of these hunts also took place in areas where we had never stepped foot before. New country, a new type of hunt, and an epic adventure. Hope you enjoy the film! Yes, I will be doing a full write up in the near future of this hunt. It was a great experience with tons of highs and lows, much like most bowhunting adventures are. Hunting high country mule deer is something that has really stuck to me. I am addicted and look forward to many more hunts at altitude. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the film!
