Each turn of the calendar I have grown to look forward to a few certain times of year. One of those times that has stolen a piece of my heart is early season high country mule deer hunting with a bow. The views are nothing short of breathtaking, as is the country beneath my feet. It steals my breath in more ways than one. And the sight of big velvet bucks feeding in what resembles a golf course and bedding in what resembles Mordor is addictive beyond measure. This past August I found myself on a solo backcountry bowhunting trip to Utah in search of such things. Along with what I’ve mentioned, I found something else. Something that will hold its weight throughout my days. Perspective.
I’m a fairly spoiled guy when it comes to hunting. I get to go out quite a bit and experience some pretty cool stuff that will live with me forever. These adventures vary in intensity, but don’t lack the least in value. All of them send me back to civilization with some sort of answer. Even if I wasn’t looking for one at the time.
After a successful Utah hunt, I sat in camp reflecting. I did so not just on the hunt and everything it entailed, but honestly my life in the mountains. It made me realize how much I’ve changed, but they haven’t. The same rocks, trees, and streams are there. The same ruggedness and the same wonder. I return to these places with maybe an extra wrinkle or two, with more miles on my odometer. Those miles don’t go backwards. They just keep growing. And the mountains stay the same. They are ABSOLUTE. I am not.
I was fortunate enough to make a film of this particular adventure and I truly hope you like it. If you do, please hit SUBSCRIBE on my Youtube Channel and blog to stay up to date with future content. Thanks!
