Day 8(Blood Trailing and Mishaps)

First thing in the morning, I had 2 very good friends show up to help track down the bull elk.  I couldn’t have been more grateful for them donating their Saturday to me.  When you find good hunting partners, hold on for dear life.  They are far and few.  We made our way over to the scene of the crime and got on blood right away.  After 500 yards of tracking, the blood came fewer and farther between.  With hard work though, we kept pushing forward finding a drop here and a drop there.  We followed the bull’s tracks for a great deal of the way, which led us to more blood.  After almost a mile and 6 hours later though, I came to the conclusion that I didn’t kill that bull.  This is the part of bowhunting, and hunting for that matter, that nobody likes.  If you do this long enough though, it is bound to happen.  I practice shooting my bow all year long and still things happen.  What actually happened though wouldn’t hit me until the next morning though.

2018 Arizona Archery Elk Hunt (Part 1)

Josh from Dialed in Hunter calling for elk on his archery elk hunt in arizona

There is a part of me that would want to start this story out the day I arrived in elk camp this year here in Arizona.  However, it just doesn’t start there.  The area that I drew my tag in has become one of the most special places to me.  I frequent it year round and have had many firsts come to life right in those very hills.  The first time I ever saw an elk bugle happened right there.  I remember him trotting and bugling at the same time.  Like he was trying to assert his dominance over the herd.  The first deer I ever took the life from happened 300 yards away from that.  It was a coues spike that meant the world to me.  Not a mile away from that, I wrapped my tag around my first bear.  An experience that lit a fire under me that still burns bright today.  Now, it was my turn to try my hand at elk hunting in these hills that I’ve called a second home.

2017 Archery Mule Deer Hunt

Bowhunting

As I woke up on the morning of December 29th, I told myself that today was going to be the day.  Today would be the day that I closed the distance, and filled my archery tag on a mule deer buck.  The 29th would be my 5th day of hunting mule deer here in my home state of Arizona.  This time of year here is a time that has grown on me and dug its roots deep into my core.  Year after year I take to the field with my bow to chase both mule deer and coues deer.  Every year I have a few successes mixed in with a ton of failures.  Of course I like to look at those failures as lessons learned and opportunities to grow.  That goes for all walks of life, not just hunting.  This year would prove no different in the “lessons learned” department.

First Lite Sawtooth Hybrid Jacket Review

Sawtooth Hybrid Jacket

Something that I have grown to look forward to every year is the coming of new products from various companies in the hunting industry.  I am always so eager to see what these folks have been cooking up and how the new additions might fit into my gear list.  Our gear has come a long way in the last 10 years and somehow it just keeps progressing.  Look at bows 5 years ago, or technical clothing.  We have come leaps and bounds in that time.  Just when I think that nothing else can be improved, a company like First Lite crushes my assumptions with their 2017 line of clothing.  One of the products that I am especially jacked up on is their new Sawtooth Hybrid Jacket and that is what we will be diving into today.

Why You NEED to Consider Bowhunting

Bowhunting

I feel like the only way for me to tell you why you need to consider hunting with a bow, is to tell you how I got hooked on it myself.  Let us begin!

In the Beginning

It wasn’t until around 15 years of age that the bow ended up snuggling its way into my life.  It did so for the simple fact that my dad was sick and tired of not drawing rifle deer tags here in Arizona(We ended up moving out here from New York when I was 9).  Archery deer tags in AZ can be purchased “over the counter.”  That was something that we definitely wanted to get our hands on the following season.  So, we bought some bows and started practicing religiously in the backyard.  It was pretty cool shooting a bow for the first time.  I remember thinking how hard it was to pull the string back and come to full draw.  I also remember being amazed when I let the arrow go.  The flight of the arrow captured my attention.

Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX Boot Review

Salomon Quest 4D2 GTX Boot in Arizona

The discussion of boots is a fickle one, but one that every hunter needs to have with themselves.  You might try on 10 pairs of boots before you find one that you like.  Then when you do find that one, is it gonna be able to withstand the rigors of the mountains?  Are they going to give you blisters after hiking 10 miles?  Are they truly waterproof?  Only time will tell that.

After trying a half dozen or so boots over the years and dealing with issues ranging from hot spots, faulty waterproofing, and literally walking the sole off of a boot, I was ready for a change.  Taking care of our feet and having a good pair of boots is imperative and I was feeling that.  The research began and I landed on the Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX backpacking boot.  I’ve put in about a year and a half of use on these and WELL over 300 miles of hiking.  Now, that I’ve gotten to know this boot like I have, I think it’s time I give you all a review.

Black Bear…..The Other Red Meat

Black Bear Meat

Over my years of black bear hunting there is a consistent theme that wafts its way past my ears every now and then.  On multiple occasions, after posting a successful bear hunting photo, folks have asked me, “Why did you shoot a bear?  You can’t eat bear.”  This leaves me puzzled every time I hear it.  Their surprise after I tell them I eat bear a few times a week never gets old though.  So, with this piece, I want to lay that question to rest.

My 2017 Backcountry Gear List

My-backcountry-gear-list-2017

As I’ve gone down the road of this blog, one of the things that I’ve gotten asked the most is “what are you bringing on your backpack hunts?”  In light of that, I have decided to post up my current backcountry gear list for 2017.  My gear list is forever growing and shrinking, but hopefully you can get the gist of what is usually in my backpack.  This list is going to be for an archery hunt in the early fall.  If it were later in the year, I would just be bringing some extra layers along.  I am by no means an ounce junkie, so I can’t tell you the EXACT weight of my pack and all of the contents in it.  For most hunts, I am sitting in the 35 pound range though, depending on how much water I am packing in.  That number will increase with the amount of days I am planning to be out, simply because of food.  Each one of my food bags is in the realm of 2 pounds per day containing about 2500-3000 calories in each one.  Besides food and water, everything else pretty much stays the same.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask below in the comments.

Another Year(2016)

Jan 1, 2017

Another year behind us.  I know this sounds a bit contrived, but it all seemed to fly by so quickly.  A great portion of my year was spent obsessing over a spring bear hunt here in Arizona.  When I get into that state of mind, it seems the only way that I end up paying attention to time is sunrise, sunset, and when the next time I can get out in the field is.  This is both an advantage and a downfall for me.  The advantage is, I stay driven at the task at hand.  The downfall?  It often makes me neglect other areas of my life.  Household chores are put to the side, laundry piles up, my wife watches way too many documentaries, and my dogs turn into ticking time bombs of energy.  As it remains, all is well. Just because it works though, doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement on my end.  I hope to find an even better balance in 2017.  I don’t plan on taking any energy away from my hunting life, but I do plan on putting more into my home life.

4 Years (First Archery Deer)

Dec 26, 2016

Even though I was set up to stay out for 3 days solo, I told my wife, the night before I left, that I would be home tomorrow night, and that I was gonna fill my tag in the morning.  I’m not one to be cocky, but I was so determined to fill my tag that I was trying to convince myself that I KNEW that I was going to “get it done.”  Up until this point, I had only been served “Failure” with a side of “Almost.”  Failure and bow hunting go together like bows and arrows and I was very familiar with all of them.  Another thing that comes with all of that head scratching though is education.  One does not pick up a set of car keys and automatically know how to drive.  The only word that comes to mind when I think of spot and stalk archery deer hunting is “Humbling.”  You will be humbled whether you fill your tag or not.  That is exactly what I felt when I was a mile from my truck on my first morning, spotted a lone buck, and then realized that I had forgotten my tag and licence in the truck.
